A very happy Chrismas and new year to you and yours hope your in Lanza because I gather it is very chilly there here in Norway it is -17,8c a beautiful day looking across thefrozen Drammen Fjord could really do a visit to Charlie’s at this time but of course work ! (hmmmm did you say something about Billions?????

You certainly achieved what you set out to do. A bar that’s become home away from home, and a team of musicians and staff that have become our second family! Every time we arrive back from Lanza and Charlies, we are busy organising our next visit! You have made it a very special place and you are a very special person and a great friend.

So, have a good rest, recharge the oul’ batteries cos we cant wait to be back again in February! XX

Ah Government wobblin’ like a big fat jelly as we speak! Contradicting each other all over the shop with the bould Mary O’Rourke [the loose cannon!] screeching for a General Election now! John Gormless [Gormley] the Green Crusader calling for a National Government – [as if] and Biffo grunting NO! NO! NO! to all of ‘em! I mean, if they cant agree on a common strategy, how the hell can they possibly agree on a way out of such a gigantic self-made disaster? But I’m sure Biffo’s totally oblivious to it all cos lets face it, he’s living in a booze-fuelled parrallel universe, pissing our money away while our Country gets sucked down the toilet!!!!!

Hmm Labour are polling really well at the moment, even though they have no policies and because of that haven’t alienated anyone. If you say nothing nobody can disagree with you.
Kenny is definately a gonner, vultures are circling again.
I do think cement man would have a shot at president,
We need Michael O Leary to take over Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, or Finance, t’would be a very cruel budget
FF will poll higher (with Lenihan in charge), they have a 25% core vote anyway, and the greens will be wiped out, (with the possible exception of Trevor Sargent)

1) @Denis and Janet, great to hear from ye and see ye soon for a pint! Nobody should be allowed into politics unless they ran a successful business first, which would give them common sense, and if they happen to have a good education as well, that would be a bonus! Two of our senior politicians are school teachers – nothing wrong with school teachers, but you don’t want to hear an anouncement while sitting in a 737 that Tiger Woods´ therapist is flying the yoke!! If we had a successful accountant, solicitor and doctor running finance/justice and the health service, who also ran successful businesses, that just might make sense, and Massimo as minister for arts and crafts!!

2) @Ian, I suppose this can be held through for any country.

3) If I had control at the moment,I would have 11 ministers working flat out to encourage employers to set up in Ireland, or generate home grown businesses with export in mind, and one minister over the rest of the portfolios deciding how to spend whatever the 11 made. Looking forward to seeing ye both soon. I was with Sharon the other night in Cork, and she’s in great form.

4) @Beanie, you have it right. The man who drove the mixer through the gates of the Dail should be taoiseach. He ran a business and he has balls, and there’s no concrete evidence against him!! I predict a labour Taoiseach in coalition with FG, but without Kenny as leader for what it’s worth – but despite all, I think FF will poll much higher than expected….

3 possibilities on the pairing issue.
1) It took the pressure off the Govt and made a GE less likely. Labour are ahead in the polls but don’t have the candidates, maybe they’d like more time to get their candidates in the field?
2) If Lab end up as the second party I think Lab/FF with Gilmore as Taoiseach is definitely a possibility. Labour can now make a deal with any party.
3) The main thing standing in Enda Kennys way of becoming the next taoiseach was Eamon Gilmore, and he just handed Enda his own ass on a plate.

With the country on it’s knees, Brian Cowen (the worlds 4th highest paid politician) returning from 3 month break, staying up singing and doing mimicks til 4am was stoopid.

We did have a one man revolution with cement mixer man and the dáil gates, “trucky ár lá”. Methinks the country is waiting to see cement mans fate before considering any revolution.

Jesus Barry, if we were in any other Country in Western Europe we’d be on the streets by now! Trouble is, we have become so used to being governed under an outdated and anti-democratic electoral system [i.e Proportional Representation], where Regional self interest is the order of the day, we seem to have lost the will to stand up and fight. I mean, how democratic is it that a handful of independents can hold any Government to ransom? Unless we change our political systems, we will continue to have the majority dictated to by the minority!

Barry, good to see your blog back.

Of course Irish politics are lost on me but so much of what you say applies across the western world as we know it and common sense is hopefully universal.

Was it not you who wrote to the effect? -

Politicians do not make Leaders – Leaders do not become Politicians.
